The Fish who Became a Woman

I want to live
in the dark depths of the ocean
Fluorescent skin
A jarring row of teeth
Small, black eyes

When I come up
once a year
to collect silk
I’ll be a devastating mermaid
A monster who cannot even sing

I will stop at a salon
early morning
Makeup to cover
my black-green skin
My yellow veins

A red wig
to cover my bald head
Purple long sleeve dress
Underneath a pair
of wooden legs to move me
A propped-up body
Melons for tits

Am I pretty enough then?

Does silk not flow in the wind
as it does in the water?

Am I still not rich,
not powerful enough?
